What is a Repetitive Strain Injury?
The term repetitive strain injury, commonly known as RSI, and often referred to as work-related upper limb disorder (WRULD), is very much a ‘capture all’ term and can cover a number of very specific medical complaints as well as those that doctors find it difficult to diagnose as a specific complaint. Repetitive strain injuries affect a number of UK workers as highlighted by recent statistics:-
- A study in 2008 showed that a staggering 68% of UK workers believed that had suffered from some sort of repetitive strain injury or work related upper limb disorder. The majority of these problems relate to the hands, wrists, shoulders and back.
- The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) believes that up to 500,000 workers are affected by repetitive strain injuries each year.
- 81,000 new RSI injuries were reported recently.
