Due to the broad range of repetitive strain injuries, it is difficult to identify any particular treatment, however there are often specific treatments available for recognised RSI injuries; these can involve self-help treatments, physiotherapy, steroid injections or possibly surgery.
Self Help
It is not always possible, but in many cases the best way to reduce symptoms from RSI is to reduce the tasks or activities which are causing the symptoms. Taking regular breaks from activity is crucial, as the body needs time to rest and heal itself. Some people find that applying either hot or cold packs to the affected area can reduce the pain, and others find that different forms of exercise such as swimming or yoga can aid in the minimisation of pain.
Making changes at work
If you feel that your job is responsible for your discomfort you should speak to your employer; they may be able to make simple changes that avoid the need for you to perform the role in which you are suffering, alternatively they could refer you to an occupation health specialist who is highly trained in identifying issues and helping to resolve them.
Physical Therapy
If your injury or pain is causing issues with your movement or mobility then your GP may refer you to a physiotherapist. They can show you exercises which will help to keep the affected area moving without pain or discomfort. They may also offer you TENS treatment (transcutaneous nerve stimulation) which uses low level electrical signals which can help to block pain.
Medicines
In many cases it is inflammation of muscles that causes the pain you feel. This can be treated using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines which can be prescribed by your GP, but be careful only to use those which are suggested by your doctor as using the incorrect type could simply mask the pain while you continue to create more damage to the area.
Complementary Therapy
While there is little hard evidence to prove its effectiveness, many people have found relief from RSI injuries through the use of complementary therapy. Acupuncture, yoga and other relaxation techniques can all help in the battle against pain.
Compensation
If you suffer from damage caused by repetitive strain and you think it is due to your employment, you might be entitled to make a claim for compensation. Contact one of our solicitors today and find out if we can help you get the payment you deserve.
