You’d be forgiven for thinking that sitting at a computer for your work is an unlikely way in which to develop a repetitive strain injury, but you might be surprised to know that as work has moved more toward computer use, instances of RSI are becoming more frequent. We’re all familiar with the concepts of safe manual handling and avoiding the prolonged use of vibrating machinery, but how can we avoid damaging our selves when sitting at a computer?
Sit Up Straight
Poor posture is a primary risk factor in RSI development; adjust your seat so that you are sitting up straight, rather than slouching. In addition make sure that your monitor is directly in front of you with the top of the screen at eye level.
Look at your typing position
When you type your wrists should be in a neutral position – neither bending toward your little finger or your thumb. You should also be careful not to type with your wrists bent upwards.
Get a decent keyboard
Don’t be fooled into thinking that because some cheaper keyboards have height adjustable feet at the back of them that it is better for your wrists to work in that position. Your keyboard should be flat and below elbow height. There is now a range of ‘ergonomic’ keyboards available which are designed to be used for long periods of time without causing any discomfort.
Take regular breaks
To avoid the development of RSI one of the best pieces of advice is to take regular breaks. You should take a five minute break after every 20 or 30 minutes of continuous activity. When you take a break get up and walk around so that you get the blood flowing around your body.
Eat well and exercise
It might sound like a doctor’s advice for everything, but in their defence your general health can make a big difference to whether you become susceptible to RSI or not.
What if it’s too late?
If you have developed a repetitive strain injury and you believe it is due to working practices in your employment, you might be entitled to claim for compensation. Your employer has a duty to provide you with systems and equipment to minimise the risk of any injury, and if can be proved that they failed to act accordingly then you could well be entitled to a pay out. Contact our solicitors today to see if you can make a claim for your RSI.
