Mercury Legal is backing a new campaign encouraging office workers to stand up and move around more.
On Your Feet Britain sees group Get Britain Standing teaming up with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to tackle a whole host of health problems linked to sitting for long periods of time at work.
It is calling on workers to stand up regularly, adjust their posture and walk around more in the working day.
At Mercury Legal, we have reported extensively on repetitive strain injuries (RSI) – one of the key problems facing office workers today.
There are many forms of RSI and these problems are just one of a whole host of health issues which office workers risk developing each day.
Office workers are particularly susceptible to developing RSI and this is down to them being in one position at their desk for large parts of the day as well as the significant amount of typing that they do. Repetitive actions like typing mean workers are not fully flexing their hands, leaving fingers inevitably ‘scrunched up’ for long periods. Without regular breaks this can lead to office workers developing RSI.
Speaking to the BBC News website Gavin Bradley, from Get Britain Standing said: “We’re all victims of our environment, we’ve taken a lot of activity out of the workplace and we’re sitting longer and longer.
“We need new and innovative ways of addressing the issue.
“Stand up when you’re on the phone or in meetings, do everything you can to avoid sitting.”
The campaign is encouraging office workers to use the stairs instead of the lift, eat lunch away from their desk and take a break from sitting at the computer at least every 30 minutes.
